History of the ICONIC Porsche 911

HI, WE’re Dan and Teresa Larocca, founders and creative partners of Secret Weapon Art. We produce custom automotive artwork for the automotive enthusiast.

One of our favorite cars to shoot is the classic Porsche 911. You’LL find several IMAGES AND pRODUCTs on our website with thE 911 as the subject matter. IT is the true gentleman's race car, and has a rich history of automotive excellence.

The Porsche 911 story began with the 901 in 1963. Production began in September of 1964, with the first 911s exported to the United States in February of 1965. It was designed by Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, famed for designing the Volkswagen Beetle. Seven prototypes were built based on Butzi’s original design.

Originally to be sold as the 901, with 82 cars badged as 901s, Peugeot claimed the rights to three-digit car names with 0 in the middle, so the Porsche 911 name was born. The fist models of the 911 had rear-mounted 130 horsepower flat-6 engines in the “boxer” configuration. The car had four seats, although the rear seats were small, so it was generally called a 2+2, rather than a four-seater.

In 1966, Porsche introduced the more powerful 911S, with a 160 horsepower. The A, B and C Series went into production in 1967, 1968, and 1969, respectively, with the D Series produced for one year from 1970-1971. The E Series for 1972-1973 model years had larger engines with power and torque increases. The 1972-1973 F Series led to the 1973-1974 Carrera RS, which stood for Race Sport. The G-K Series were produced from 1973-1977.

Since 1963, one million 911s have been built, with the millionth manufactured in 2017 and kept by Porsche in its permanent collection. The 911 has been raced extensively by private and factory teams, in a variety of classes. Two thirds of Porches’ 30,000 race wins were driving a 911. Porsche has become a major player in the premium automobile segment, however, our car art prints and car photography are focused on the 911 model specifically.

Porsche has used internal code numbers for each series of the 911, but all models have been marketed and sold as 911s. Vintage air-cooled engine 911s were manufactured between 1964 and 1998. COLLECTORS who own these AIR-COOLED cars are unique characters AND TEND TO BELIEVE their machines ARE art ON WHEELS. THESE OWNERS ALONG WITH THE AVERAGE PORSCHE ENTHUSIAST COME TOGETHER ONCE A YEAR AT A UNIQUE DESTINATION WITHIN THE U.S. FOR Luftgekühlt (air-cooled). THIS GLORIFIED CARS + COFFEE GATHERING IS A GALLERY OPENING TO SHOWCASE ALL THINGS PORSCHE - ONE OF A KIND RACE VEHICLES, CUSTOM ENGINE AND GRAPHICS BUILDS, SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS, ETC. HOWEVER, THE BEST PART OF Luftgekühlt IS THE CAMARADERIE AND STORYTELLING THAT GOES ON BETWEEN THE OWNERS AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET NEW FRIENDS AND REKINDLE THEIR PASSION FOR THE PORSCHE BRAND.

THESE Porsche 911 owners and their machines are the subject of our automotive artwork, car canvas art and art prints. We use our 30+ years of design, art direction, photography and production experience to produce custom automotive art for automotive enthusiasts. We specialize in photographing owners with their vehicles, and producing custom made art of their cars. OUR GOAL IS TO make OWNERS and their machines look good!
